XT-2000 Orange Oil Site-Tested To Help Save Azores

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – As the termite epidemic continues to sweep the Azores, researchers and government officials are searching for a safe solution to save hundreds of historical buildings at risk. XT-2000 visited the island of Terceira in April 2006 at the request of world-renowned entomologist Tim Myles of Toronto, Canada, and Professor Paulo Borges with the University of the Azores, Portugal.

Designated as an UNESCO World Heritage site, the old city of Angra do Heroismo on the island of Terceira is being devastated by termites. Due to the structure of the town’s buildings and their close proximity to one another, tenting and fumigation is difficult if not impossible. Other alternatives also were not practical for the town. As a result, orange oil became an attractive option with its unique ability to wick through wood moving through the wood’s porous cells in all direction, killing termites on contact.

XT-2000 Orange Oil is a naturally occurring essential oil containing the active ingredient d-limonene. Derived from the rind of oranges, this citrus oil has been successfully used in the United States to eradicate drywood termites from structures with a drill and treat method.

Conducted by XT-2000 trained inspectors and technicians, five sites were treated with XT-2000 Orange Oil: three homes and two museums including the famous Angra do Heroismo Museum. Results from the case study have shown no signs of drywood termites in any location where treatment occurred. Local Azores officials are considering additional studies and test treatments with XT-2000.

“We were confident that XT-2000 Orange Oil could help solve the Azores’ termite problems,” said Michael Folkins, president of XT-2000, Inc. “Our amazing orange oil has received such positive response in the U.S. for drywood termite eradication that we knew it would work abroad. It is great relief to our staff that XT-2000 may become an alternative method, available to the people of the Azores that is of low risk to humans and animals but solves the area’s pest problems.”
